Synopsis
The Holy Week, somewhere around 1900, Romania. The tense relationship between the Jewish innkeeper Leiba and Gheorghe, his servant, reaches a boiling point which brings their separation. Proud and violent, Gheorghe promises Leiba revenge on Easter night. The threat of Gheorghe, in the anti-semitic environment of the Romanian village at the beginning of the 20th century, distresses Leiba. His psychological slip transforms him from victim to aggressor.
Reviews
,,In its desire to understand the roots of hatred, and more specifically those of the Holocaust, Holy Week quickly resonates with one of German filmmaker Michael Haneke‘s toughest works, 2009’s The White Ribbon.''
,, a world as beautiful in its rural simplicity as it is tainted by prejudice and simmering conflicts, witness to a vicious and endless cycle of hatred, as the director describes it''
,,A plethora of means are used in creating the conflict, which Cohn retains perfect control of, to create a tango it’s impossible to look away from''
,,What interested you about the novel and what made you say it is still relevant today?''
Les personnages de Semaine sainte sont moins au paradis qu’en enfer et Andrei Cohn les fait brûler à petit feu, quitte à prendre parfois son temps.
