Holy Week was considered one of the best Romanian films of 2024 according to the top compiled by Films in Frame magazine.
2024 was a year that witnessed many disturbing events on a political and social level. In this rhythm in which the world was moving, Holy Week by Andrei Cohn had its international premiere at the 74th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. With the subject inspired by O făclie de Paște by Caragiale, having the theme of tense relations that the Jewish innkeeper Leiba Zibal has with those in his community.
A subject that allows numerous opinions to unfold and which in the course of action the past year has shown us, the film has indeed taken upon itself a risk, as Ionuț Mareș states.
In the same artistic flow as Caragiale reveals in his novella, what will remain unique to any era for a long time is the analysis of the human soul and the psychological processes it goes through, which ultimately send it on a path where its actions are final.
This is what director Andrei Cohn reveals in his latest film Holy Week and what has also been appreciated in the film critic community.
